Rome – Bespoke travel journal
My client has fallen love with The Eternal City. She is a London based Fine Artist who loves to paint and draw in the open, in situ, taking it all in as she goes along. She’s commissioned Some Odd Pages Book Arts studio to create a special travel journal for her to work with over several visits to the Lazio region. The brief for this bespoke order specified a desire for creative pages which the artist can then respond to, expand and develop into her own unique Artist’s Book. This required a good balance. I created a range of original drawings and materials to inspire and enhance a Sense of Place without intruding on the artist’s own creative impulse. (Luckily, I’ve been to Rome!)
Here’s how the idea developed into the finished book.
In this commission it was important to arrange pages with enough content to provide interest and triggers to creativity without getting in the way of the client’s vision and creative impulse.
I chose colours, materials and a binding which are tactile and complement this unique sense of place. Maps of both ancient Rome and nearby Ostia Antica, its ancient seaport, were added along with a few clean, iconographic drawings of my own. I like the simplicity of the drawings especially; they carry all the gesture of original, hand-drawn lines while merely representing a kind of key map to the city centre. (The one of the central railway station and the Colosseo is my favourite!) My client will be able to elaborate and expand through these pages and covers making this truely her own unique Artist’s Book on ROME.
This book really becomes the character of the artist. What kind of book is yours? CONTACT
